Bosch Predictive Safety Systems Help Decrease Vehicle Accidents

FLAT ROCK, Mich. – Bosch announces the introduction of its new driver assistance technology, predictive safety systems (PSS), which reduces the severity of accidents and helps drivers avoid accidents in emergency braking situations.

PSS utilize the sensors and an electronic control unit from adaptive cruise control (ACC) to recognize emergency braking situations. Once this state is identified, the safety technology operates in three phases. First, predictive brake assist builds up preventive brake pressure by placing the brake pads on the brake discs as a matter of precaution, and setting the hydraulic brake assistant into a state of "alert." If the driver actually brakes, the fastest possible brake response is achieved with optimal deceleration values and the shortest possible stopping distance.

If the driver does not brake and the system continues to recognize a critical traffic condition, it operates phase two by providing the driver with an early warning — such as a noticeable brake pulse. Finally, the system will trigger fullyautomatic emergency braking with maximum vehicle deceleration if a collision is unavoidable, helping to reduce the severity of the crash.

PSS are part of the Bosch CAPS concept. CAPS (Combined Active and Passive Safety) offers a comprehensive cross linkage of sensors and electronic control units from existing active and passive safety systems, such as electronic stability control (ESC), airbag control units, and driver assistance systems like ACC.
